What Is It?

Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shut-off is a powertrain control module (PCM) function that helps improve vehicle fuel economy by deactivating the fuel injectors when the vehicle is decelerating or coasting and then automatically restarting when needed for acceleration or when the vehicle's speed approaches zero.

How AD Fuel Shut-off Works...
Let’s compare two similar vehicles traveling at freeway speeds and slowing for a red light or exiting the freeway. One vehicle has a traditional drivetrain, and the other with an AD Fuel Shut-off equipped drivetrain. With AD Fuel Shut-off Fuel delivery stops when the driver takes his/her foot completely off the accelerator pedal of an AD Fuel Shut-off -equipped vehicle at freeway speeds.

 The PCM completely turns off the fuel injectors. The engine continues to rotate using the transmission energy, instead of fuel, to maintain the momentum. All systems are normal while the vehicle is "coasting."
 All other powertrain, braking and electrical systems continue to function normally while the fuel delivery is stopped Fuel delivery is restored when the vehicle slows to a predefined speed or if the driver depresses the accelerator pedal.
 The PCM seamlessly turns the fuel injectors back on
Without AD Fuel Shut-off
Fuel delivery NEVER stops in a vehicle without AD Fuel Shut-off – even when the driver takes his/her foot completely off the accelerator pedal. The engine is always running even when the vehicle is coasting – which requires fuel.
Mechanical resistance from the transmission and the tires will eventually slow the vehicle if there is no braking
What it means to consumers
AD Fuel Shut-off is all about efficiency. In fact, it is estimated that it can improve fuel efficiency by 1%. Drivers may notice an AD Fuel Shut-off equipped vehicle seems to slow more quickly than a vehicle without the system. This is similar to the "engine braking effect" in a vehicle with a manual transmission.
This is completely normal and indicates AD Fuel Shut-off is maximizing fuel efficiency.

AD Fuel Shut-off is a Ford technology designed to maximize fuel economy for automatic transmission-equipped drivetrains.

Ford tops in quality survey

Ford Motor Co.'s newest automobiles had fewer problems than any other manufacturer -- including Toyota Motor Corp. -- according to a new survey of initial quality, details of which were obtained by The Detroit News.

It was the first time ever that the Dearborn automaker beat its arch-rival in the survey, which was conducted for Ford by the RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills. The study also put Ford in a dead heat with Toyota in customer satisfaction. "We've been tied with Toyota before, but it sure feels better to be on the top!" wrote Bennie Fowler, Ford's global head of quality, in a memo to employees Friday, a copy of which was obtained by The News. "We can all be pleased with the progress we have made in quality, even as we face external and internal challenges in a tumultuous climate. Our progress has come as the result of our union partnerships in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, along with the work of dedicated teams in manufacturing, product development, purchasing, marketing, sales, service, legal, IT and others who follow disciplined, standardized processes."

RDA's research is used by a number of automakers, both foreign and domestic, and has historically tracked closely with other independent research by firms such as J.D. Power and Associates. Its second quarter study showed new Ford, Mercury and Lincoln cars and trucks had 1,185 issues per 1,000 vehicles. Toyota had 1,215 problems, while Honda Motor Co. had 1,291.

Both Toyota and Ford had an 80 percent positive customer satisfaction rating, Fowler said.

The results come a year after he vowed publicly to seize Toyota's crown as the quality leader among fullline manufacturers in the United States. But Ford has found that its quality gains have still not convinced all consumers that its products are on par with those from its Japanese competitors.

Fowler said more work is needed, particularly on the luxury brand, which faces even tougher competition.

"There is more work to be done," he said." We want nothing less than to be the highest-quality automotive manufacturer year over year!"

CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operating Registration)
Any Corporation, Company or Person operating a vehicle with a registered Gross Vehicle Weight over 4,500 kg (10,000 lbs) or any Bus with 10 or more passengers must have a CVOR. The registration of a CVOR is free. (www.mto.gov.on.ca)

G License
G License allows you to drive a vehicle with a GVW or GCW of up to 11,000 kg (24,250 lbs)
GVW Gross vehicle weight (the weight of the Vehicle and its contents)
GCW Gross Combined weight (the weight of the Vehicle and it’s contents plus the weight of the Trailer and it’s contents.) The Trailer and its contents can weigh no more than 4,600 kg (10,141 lbs.)

D License
D license allows the Driver to operate any Truck or Trailer with a GVW or GCW over 11,000 kilograms (24,250 lbs) provided the Trailer and its contents are under 4,600 kilograms (10,141 lbs)

Z Endorsement
Is required to operate any vehicle with an Air Braking System regardless of any other Criteria.

A License
“A” License is required to operate a vehicle pulling a Trailer and contents greater than 4,600 kg (10,141 lbs). Provided it does not exceed the weight restriction of the Manufacturer or the Length and Width restrictions of the MTO.

Weigh Scales
All Commercial Vehicles regardless of size are required to stop at Weigh Scales when the Amber Lights are flashing. This includes Pick Up Trucks. The MTO is mainly concerned with Heavy Trucks and Trailers however Light Duty Trucks may also be pulled over.

Vehicles with Plows
Roof Clearance Lights and Rear Marker Lights must be on every Vehicle that is over 81” Wide.
(This would pertain to Dual Rear Wheel Vehicles and most Plow Trucks)

2011 Ford Explorer

What it is: A huge favorite in the 1990s, Explorer sales have, uh, cooled over the past few years. This latest Explorer ditches the body-on-frame platform and the V-8 for a V-6 and a lighter unibody structure based on the Ford Flex.
Why it’s important: Buyers have been shying away from body-on-frame SUVs for years. Ford’s only hope of growing Explorer sales is to change to a unibody platform.
Powertrain: Basic versions will get a 262-hp, 3.5-liter V-6. For those seeking more firepower, a twin-turbo version will be available with 355 horses.
Competition: Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse, Mazda CX-7/CX-9, Dodge Durango.
Estimated arrival: Look for it in blue-oval shops at the end of 2010.

Ford Canada sees return to sales growth

TORONTO (Reuters) - The head of Ford Motor Co of Canada (F.N) said on Thursday he anticipates May will be the first month of 2009 when the company will sees year-over-year growth in Canadian retail sales.
President David Mondragon told Reuters that Ford's Canadian market share has risen for six consecutive months and the company outsold Toyota Canada (7203.T) for five of those months.
Part of the reason the Ford brand has been strengthening has been its strong financial position, said Mondragon.
The company's Detroit-based peers, General Motors Corp (GM.N) and Chrysler, have had to rely on government financing to stay afloat during the brutal downturn in the auto industry. Even with government aid, Chrysler recently filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States, while many analysts expect GM to soon follow suit.
"We are confident we can finance our way through these difficult times." Mondragon said. "We have no intention today of asking for government assistance."
Ford's financial position has allowed it launch a flurry of new products, with seven coming over the next six months, more than any other manufacturer in Canada.
So far in 2009, the company is the No. 2 autoseller in Canada, compared with its No. 4 position last year.
Ford's retail share is up 1.2 percentage points year over year, and its total share is ahead 1.1 percentage points.
A one-point share in Canada is worth about 15,000 units.
Despite the company's growing market share, there will still be pain in 2009, with Canadian auto sales set for further big declines, said Mondragon.
"We initially started the year thinking the industry would run down 7 percent," he said. "We have reassessed the industry, and we now see it down between 13 and 15 percent in the calendar year."
He said one thing that could force Ford Canada to change its forecast again, would be if the Canadian government were to introduce a "cash for clunkers" program like ones instituted in Europe and the one the United States is looking to implement.
"We're hoping a scrappage program could bring about 100,000 incremental sales in Canada and claw back really half of the decline on a year-over-year basis."
The U.S. plan would give consumers up to $4,500 for vehicles aged eight years or older, to put toward a new, more fuel efficient vehicle. Similar plans have spurred auto sales in Europe.
To cope with the dearth of sales in the current environment, GM recently announced it would cut over 300 of its dealerships to adjust for the lower demand, but Mondragon said Ford has already done its cutting. "Since 1999, we've downsized our dealers by 23 percent, so we've already made those hard decisions," he said.
Worldwide, the company has closed 17 plants and laid off over 60,000 employees over the past decade.

Led by Fusion Sales Ford Outsells Toyota in April

Though it means less in today's market than it did a year ago, Ford moved more vehicles in the month of April than Japanese juggernaut Toyota for the first time in over a year. Looking at the numbers, all this means is that Ford managed keep its sales from dropping lower than Toyota's for the month. The real test will be to see if Ford can make this feat a trend.

Ford sold 129, 898 units last month, including the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury divisions, but excluding Volvo. Compared with last year, that's a sales drop of 31 percent. The drop can be attributed to any Ford truck or SUV of your choosing, but the most likely culprits are the Ford Expedition (down 72 percent for the month, 70 percent year-to-date), the Ford Explorer (down 49 percent for the month and 60 percent year-to-date) and the F-series (down 35.8 percent for April and 42 percent year-to-date).

Cue the refreshed 2010 Ford Fusion. The midsized sedan saw sales rise 21.7 percent compared with April 2008, to 18,321 units. We'll have to wait a few months to see if this sales bump is long-lasting, or just the normal sales bump that follows most car redesigns.

Meanwhile, Toyota sold 126,540 cars under its Toyota, Lexus and Scion divisions in April, a drop of 41.9 percent compared with last year. The industry average decline was 37.4 percent. The Avalon, Prius, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Sequoia and Tundra all had declines of more than 50 percent compared to April 2008. Though Camry sales were down 36.7 percent last month, Toyota sold 7003 more units of its midsized sedan than Ford sold of the Fusion, emphasizing just how far Ford still has to go in that segment.

We'll have to wait until the beginning of next month to see if this is just a temporary shakeup, or if Ford will emerge as true competition for the world's largest automaker.

Ford claims 81.5 mpg in Fusion hybrid

Ford Motor Co. claims it has set a new world record for fuel economy in a gasoline-powered midsized sedan, driving an unmodified production Ford Fusion hybrid just over 1,445 miles on a single tank of gasoline.

That translated into a whopping 81.5 mile-per-gallon average, nearly double the certified mileage of the new sedan. The Ford team, which included NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, accomplished the feat by practicing fuel-saving driving techniques, such as coasting to red lights and accelerating smoothly on greens.

"Not only does this demonstrate the Fusion hybrid's fuel efficiency, it also shows that driving technique is one of the keys to maximizing its potential," said Nancy Gioia, director of sustainable mobility technologies and hybrid vehicle programs at Ford.

According to Guinness World Records, the world record for the longest distance traveled on a single tank of fuel was 1,459.16 miles, but that was set by a diesel-powered Peugeot in Australia in 2002.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif.--Even though the U.S. auto industry has been badly weakened by poor decisions and falling sales, new technologies are bringing a new vibrancy to the industry, said Bill Ford, the executive chairman of Ford Motor.

In an effort to make more fuel-efficient vehicles, Ford Motor is placing its bets on a number of alternative technologies, including electric vehicles, biofuels, and clean diesel, Ford said during a talk at the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference here on Monday.

Ford himself was integral in the company adopting sustainability and environmental awareness in its operations. He spearheaded the construction of the Rouge River factory, which adopted a number of techniques to minimize energy and water use.

Moving the company to cleaner technologies and environmental responsibility has helped Ford financially and motivated employees, Ford said. Many of the changes Ford adopted at Rouge River in Michigan made sense financially and its improvements into fuel efficiency have helped the company.

"I am so energized by what is going on now--it's fantastic. Not only is it the right thing to do but there's also all this cool technology being developed now," Ford said. "Not just in powertrains, but in safety, communications--it's a really cool time to be part of the industry."

Ford plans to bring small cars designed originally for congested cities in Europe to the U.S., he said.

"The downsizing of the fleet is going to happen. We at Ford are placing a big bet on that," he said. "It's a bet we're making because we believe that it's the right thing to do. Whether we get the timing right--don't know."

Over the years, the culture of the company has changed gradually to take the notion of environmental sustainability more seriously.

"When I joined Ford board in 1988, I was told I had to stop associating with any known or former environmentalists," he joked. At the time, Ford said that it was important for the company to have a dialogue with environmental groups.

Ford is giving its new Fiesta a different kind of rollout, with 100 contest winners who will get a car, gas and cameras to chronicle their travels for six months.
The results will be posted on social networking sites like Facebook, YouTube and Flickr starting next month, the automaker said at an event in Times Square Friday.
Ford is hoping the campaign makes the compact Fiesta - billed as its most fuel-efficient nonhybrid - as big a small car in America as it is in Europe.
The "agents" who will help them hype the car's new features - iPod ports, driver's knee air bag, voice-activated commands - were chosen from 3,300 entries on YouTube.
Graphic designers Paul Heath, 32, and Zac Shaw, 28, of Kingston, N.Y., were among the winners.
The pals, who perform in an indie rock band called Dead Unicorn, plan to use their Fiesta for a cross-country trip.
"We heard about it from a friend," Shaw said of the promotion.
"We got real excited because we had a car that was broken down. This opportunity came up, and what better way to get back on the road?"
"We'll put the gas mileage to the test," Heath said. "It's a liberating thing."
The Fiesta is soldout in Europe and on back order in Asia, and Ford is banking on it to lift the company out of the doldrums in the U.S.
Ford hopes the model - which will be released here in 2011 - will change the public's perception of small cars. The Fiesta will cost around the same as a Focus, between $13,000 and $18,000, and get 40 miles to the gallon.
"A lot of people think of small cars as econo-boxes," Ford spokesman Alan Hall said. "You don't have to sacrifice what you want to get a small car."

In an exclusive joint interview with the Free Press last week, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford and Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally said they are taking decisive action to profitably grow their business the way they want to.
"Look at the speed with which we are moving," said Mulally, who has made progress with the UAW and bondholders. "We have the resources, and we are implementing our transformational plan. ... When you are owned by the U.S. government, you are in a different situation."
How much is the "Ford is different" message helping the automaker? Said Mulally: "A lot."
In the hour-long interview, the duo exuded confidence in each other, their team, their vehicles and their plan.

Ford Motor Co., which has been racing to restructure its business, is more determined than ever to weather the recession without federal loans, its top two leaders say.
Bill Ford Jr., the great-grandson of company founder Henry Ford, and Alan Mulally, who joined Ford as president and chief executive officer in 2006, told the Free Press in an exclusive, side-by-side interview last week that the decision to forgo federal assistance gives the 106-year-old company freedom to control its future.
"Believe us when we say we have no plans to take government loans," Ford said. "We would just prefer to be masters of our own destiny."
In recent months, Ford and Mulally often have said how "Ford is different," an effort to contrast the company with GM and Chrysler, which have received $17.4 billion in federal loans and are seeking more.

Ford’s researchers spent thousands of hours listening to truck buyers to gain inspiration for a host of new, smart features inside the new F-150.

Start with a clever interior, which features a flow-through console that has been lengthened by about 2in. to stow two or more laptop computers. Special ridges are molded into the edges of the bin to accommodate file folders. The console also has a multi-tiered, removable tray and locks to protect valuables. Ford also offers a pull-down center console with dual cupholders and large storage bin when you need three seats up front to transport one extra passenger to a job site. The front of the lower bench seat pulls out for added storage.

Ford CEO wants $3,500 scrappage incentive for buyers

The head of Ford Canada is calling for a hefty government subsidy to encourage Canadians to buy new cars, arguing that is a better means of helping the auto sector than massive cash injections for automakers.
Ford CEO David Mondragon told a parliamentary committee on Monday night that Ottawa should provide a $3,500 "stimulus" for Canadians who scrap their older car for a new one.
That would get vehicles that are least 11 years old off the road, replaced by cleaner, safer, more fuel efficient vehicles, Mondragon said.
"What we need to do is provide an anchor in the sea and right now there is no anchor in the sea for our ship," Mondragon said.
"There are great opportunities for governments to help the industry and the economy find the bottom."
Ford has not asked for a bailout and says it can manage on its own this year. GM and Chrysler, however, have both asked for about $10 billion from Ottawa and the Ontario government.
But Canada's finance minister, Jim Flaherty, says that this incentive plan won't work.
"People who are driving old cars don't tend to buy new cars when they replace them, and I think that's what Ford's probably interested in, people buying new cars," he said.
But Ford says that a similar incentive program in Germany boosted sales 22 per cent.
A grim prediction
Mondragon was critical of Ottawa's bailout plans for Ford's competitors, and said it would be better to put the cash in the hands of buyers to encourage them to start shopping again.
Currently, the federal government is offering a $300 rebate for Canadians who trade in their clunker for a new car. That's so small, Mondragon said, that no one is actually using it at the moment.
He said a much larger rebate, along with money to help ensure Canadians can get loans to buy new cars, is the best approach to helping the auto sector.
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said he would consider boosting the so-called scrappage program. He said Mondragon pitched the idea to him last week and that he found it compelling.
He said the idea is one of many that the province's finance minister is considering for the upcoming budget to be presented on March 26.
Mondragon's grim prediction to the committee was that auto sales will fall 13 per cent in 2009, compared to 2008 statistics -- a drop of 250,000 vehicles.
That could mean $20 billion in lost sales and $3 billion less in tax revenue for governments.
Mark Nantais, of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association, went along with Mondragon on the rebate suggestion. He said Germany introduced a similar plan and boosted sales by more than 20 per cent in February.
"Aside from the immediate economic benefit, we inherently enjoy a triple win with new vehicles that are cleaner -- 12-18 times less polluting -- more fuel efficient and indeed are...safer," he said.
Nantais said auto production in Canada is down 60 per cent so far in 2009. If that remains consistent throughout the year, it will result in 1.6 million fewer vehicles rolling off assembly lines in this country.
The statement came as the Canadian Auto Workers and General Motors reached a tentative deal that will see wages and pensions frozen in a bid to reduce labour costs.
On Sunday, the CAW and GM negotiated the agreement that would freeze base wages and pension levels, extend the union's existing contract to 2012 instead of 2011 and require autoworkers to pay a health premium, among other concessions.
The deal is expected to be ratified in a vote later this week and is contingent on GM securing the more than $30 billion in loans it is seeking from the U.S., Canadian and Ontario governments.
Auto industry expert and Trent University professor Dimitry Anastakis said that the automaker needs billions in aid to stay afloat, and the union concessions will only save the company millions.
Last week, GM admitted that auditors expressed "substantial doubt" about the company's ability to keep operating and it fell to third place in the Canadian market in February sales.

Concept Ford Iosis Crossover EcoCUV

We've seen Sport Utility Vehicles, Sport Activity Vehicles, Crossover Utility Vehicles, and now Ford has introduced something new: the Multi-Activity Vehicle.

The term is applied to the Ford Iosis MAX concept that debuted at the Geneva motor show. Canada's National Post says, "the iosis MAX showcases new door opening concepts, lightweight materials, advanced aerodynamics and a preview of the European development of Ford's global EcoBoost gas engine technology coming in 2010."

Automobile Magazine says, "Much of the vehicle - especially the front fascia - is a dead ringer for the smaller Fiesta, utilizing elements of Ford's so-called "Kinetic Design" language. Same goes for the interior - those lightweight seats may be a flight of fancy, but we can't help but spot similarities between the Iosis Max's dashboard and those of the production Festiva, Kuga, and Mondeo."

Meanwhile, Wired thinks "Iosis MAX is cool because it's got some green cred. Think of it as an EcoUV." That green cred, according to Wired, comes from the concept's "four-cylinder turbocharged direct-injection 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine that produces 180 horsepower. Ford claims the engine delivers 20 percent better fuel economy than conventional gasoline engines offering the same power. The engine features automatic start-stop technology and is mated to a six-speed dual clutch transmission. Ford says the setup delivers 40 mpg. EcoBoost engines will begin appearing in some North American models later this year."

Automobile likes the MAX, but adds, "Stare long enough at Ford's Iosis Max concept and you may actually see the next-generation Ford Focus. That may seem hard to believe, given the Iosis's wild hue, doors, and interior, but we're told that's exactly the case."

The Iosis MAX has small car stature and hatchback looks, but uses sliding rear doors. Inside, four sporty seats float along a center consol that extends into the rear. The concept's bodywork is low to the ground, giving it a sporty and aerodynamic look that should also improve fuel economy. The Iosis MAX is also expected to use engine start/stop technology to shut off the engine at stoplights, further saving fuel.

Ford launches F-150 SVT Raptor web site

Dearborn, Michigan - Ford has launched a new web site to promote its F-150 SVT Raptor, the company’s new high-performance off-road truck.
The site, at Raptor, includes a 360-degree view, information on the truck’s unique components, videos showing the truck in extreme terrain, and clips and interviews with key players from its successful racing debut in the Tecate Score Baja 1000.
“We wanted to ensure the site is true to what Raptor is, emphasizing it as different and unique,” said communications manager Eric Peterson. “Delivering Raptor’s unique durability and performance is something only Ford can do, staying true to both our tough truck and racing heritage. We wanted to make that clear through the site.”

Ford Working to Win Back "Lost Generation"

It can be rare to hear a CEO admit that their company has made mistakes. Allan Mulally, CEO of Ford, has done just that.
Speaking at the WSJ ECO:nomics conference in Santa Barbra, the Wall Street Journal reports Mulally acknowledging Ford products haven't always been the best. "We really have lost a generation," WSJ quotes him as saying, adding "In the past, Ford ‘did not have a consistency of purpose,' he said, but is now committed to producing vehicles that are ‘best in class.'"
And, in a surprising turnaround from the company who has made much of their living on the back of the F-150 pickup truck, WSJ says, "He reiterated that Ford's mix of vehicles will do a 180 in coming years, with light cars-rather than trucks and SUVs-representing two-thirds of the automaker's lineup, as rising energy prices make fuel-efficient cars a priority for consumers."
Mulally's comments come as many analysts see Ford avoiding the doom-and-gloom news affecting other domestic automakers. Forbes says, "The No. 2 U.S. automaker is so far navigating brilliantly through a very dangerous minefield while the fate of its U.S. competitors, General Motors and Chrysler, looks bleaker by the day." The Detroit Free Press says, "While GM and Chrysler quickly asked for bridge loans in order to keep operating, Ford -- thanks to a cash pile it built by borrowing back in 2006 before the credit crunch -- said it didn't need a rescue. At least not right away."
Yesterday's announcement that Ford will retire 40 percent of its debt, was, according Forbes, "shrewdly timed, coming on the eve of a crucial meeting Thursday between President Obama's auto industry task force and a committee representing GM's bondholders." While Ford has been taking steps to remove red ink from its books, Forbes also reports that the company was able "to strike a deal with the United Auto Workers union about how to pay for retiree health care. Ford's deal, allowing it to fund up to half its $13.2 billion future liability with stock instead of cash, is likely a model for GM, which is still locked in tough negotiations with the UAW."
The steps appear to be working, as Ford has begun to separate itself from GM and Chrysler's woes. University of Michigan Accounting professor Gregory Miller told the Free Press, "The financial crisis has allowed them to say, 'Quit lumping us together. There is no Big Three anymore. Look at us for what we are.'"
With sales still down, only time will tell if Ford's bold moves will continue to pay off - but is seems that some people think they will.
Even though it is doing better than other American automakers, Ford sales are still down and the company if offering incentives to reverse that trend.

Ford marks initial EcoBoost engine production

Cleveland, Ontario - Ford has begun pre-production of its new fuel-efficient EcoBoost engine at its Cleveland Engine Plant in Ohio, which has been idle since 2007. The plant will be the first manufacturing site to produce the new engine.The plant will initially build 3.5-litre V6 engines that will be optional on the 2010 Lincoln MKS, Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT, and standard on the 2010 Taurus SHO. The engines combine direct injection technology and turbocharging to achieve up to 20 per cent better fuel economy and 15 per cent lower CO2 emissions when compared with larger-displacement engines, while producing 355 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.“The launch of EcoBoost is the big milestone in Ford’s commitment to deliver affordable fuel-efficient cars and trucks to millions of customers,” said Barb Samardzich, vice-president of global powertrain engineering. “The EcoBoost V6 is going to achieve the fuel economy that our customers demand, while delivering even more of the performance that they want.”Ford has invested US$55 million in the plant, which will use about 250 employees taken from the existing three plants at the site.The company said that by 2013, more than 90 per cent of its North American lineup will be available with EcoBoost technology.

2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150

Ford Motor Company kicked off its presence at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show at a massive Harley-Davidson dealership just outside of the Windy City in the suburb of Glenview, Illinois. There, Chief Engineer Matt O’Leary gave a brief presentation, reviewing most of what has already been released regarding FoMoCo’s latest special edition, the new 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150.

Afterward, I had a chance to talk with Ford Design Manager Brad Richards, the guy responsible for the Harley-Davidson line of special edition F-Series trucks. Even though the Harley-Davidson changes to the F-150 are almost entirely color and trim, Richards revealed some interesting details:

Harley-Davidson head honchos are deeply involved with the project. Ford designers like Richards visit Harley-Davidson’s Milwaukee studio at least twice a year to meet with H-D founder Willie G. Davidson and other senior officials. Richards and other bikers on Ford’s staff also ride to events like Daytona Bike Week and Sturgis with Harley-Davidson staff to meet with bike enthusiasts and see what trends they may be following.

The team that has put together fourteen Harley-Davidson F-Series trucks over the last nine years is something of a “skunk works” within Ford. “We’ve pioneered a few things that have gone on to other F-Series trucks,” says Richards. “We can try things out because volumes are lower. Like those 22-inch wheels. Now you can get them on every F-Series.”

The use of aniline leather was also pioneered on Harley-Davidson F-Series trucks. This is a less treated type of cowhide that shows age the way a broken-in leather jacket or favorite pair of shoes might. “It’s leather that is not as treated, that is closer to natural -- so the patina changes over time,” says Richards. Again, the low volume of these trucks and “skunk works” mentality of the Harley-Davidson/Ford alliance allowed for experimentation with this kind of leather. As a result, aniline leather is also found on Ford’s King Ranch line of vehicles as well.

Some of the more expensive items on the truck are the cloisonné badges found on the seats. Made by hand in a multi-step process (Brad said something like 12 steps of firing and re-firing), no two of these badges are identical. They are handsome though, and add a bit of Native American/wild west feel to the interior. Other tricky bits are aluminum Harley-Davidson bar and shield badges. No way Willie G. would allow Ford to use plastic, says Richards (though I was surprised to hear he didn’t demand iron).

Most Harley-Davidson F-150 owners do not use their trucks to haul or tow their motorcycles. In fact, a substantial number of H-D F150 owners do not even own Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Those who do tow or haul, tend to use the Super-Duty F-250 version.

Finally, the mind blowing factoid of the night courtesy of Richards: Willie G. went to Art Center College of Design, one of the world’s foremost automotive/transportation design schools. That is a bit like finding out Alice Cooper attended Juilliard, no?

No word on the pricing, volume, or availability of 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F150, but we’d speculate roughly $60,000 (like the previous generation), with availability this spring, and a target of approximately 15,000 units.

Ford will likely move every one it makes, as the Harley-Davidson special edition has traditionally been a strong seller.

I was at the Auto Show in Detroit and I had a chance to sit in the various Competitors Truck to see how much room there was.
I was surprise how little room there is in the Back of most Pickups in the Class 1 Category. I tested the Chevrolet, Toyota, F-150 and the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab and the Crew Cab. Lets face it these vehicles are meant for Work and Play so if your taking your Crew to the Job Site or going out for Dinner with Friends you may want your passengers to be comfortable.

Plug-in Ford Transit Connect to make its debut in 2010

Ford Motor Co. plans to unveil today the North American production version of the 2010 Transit Connect, a commercial van, at the Chicago Auto Show, and to announce its intent to produce an electric version.
The gasoline engine-powered version is to go on sale this summer for $26,799, while the plug-in, battery electric version is to arrive in the second half of 2010.
The electric van is to be powered by a lithium-ion battery and offer an expected maximum range of 160 kms from a fully charged battery.
The battery electric version of Transit Connect is a centerpiece of Ford's plans to add four new electric or hybrid vehicles to its lineup over the next four years, said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of product development.
And while the initial sales volume of the electric version of Transit Connect might be low, the battery-powered commercial van is a "precursor to higher-volume applications of electrification," Kuzak said.
Ford plans to introduce a new battery electric vehicle the size of its Ford Focus compact car in 2011, as well as next-generation hybrid vehicles in 2012 and plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2012.
In January, Ford named Magna International Inc. as its partner for electric vehicles for general consumers.
But for Transit Connect, Ford is partnering with Smith Electric Vehicles, a unit of Sunderland, England-based Tanfield Group.
Smith Electric Vehicles is to convert Transit Connect into a battery electric vehicle in the United States at a location that has yet to be announced, said Mike Tinskey, Ford's manager of hybrid programs.
"What we tried to do is segment the electric-vehicle market into two, so we have the retail market, which is Magna, and then the commercial market, which we believe is going to be a high percentage of fleet customers," Tinskey said. "So that's why we chose a different partner that actually knows the fleet customer."
The gasoline-powered version of Transit Connect debuted in Europe in 2003.
Ford executives said the small commercial van is perfect for both large commercial customers and small-business owners who do a lot of driving in cities and congested areas.
Ford said the gasoline-powered van that goes on sale this year will deliver at least 20 miles per gallon in the city and 24 m.p.g. on the highway.
Transit Connect has been a successful vehicle for Ford in Europe since its inception, Kuzak said, but sales of the vehicle dropped last year as the entire European automotive industry struggled with a global recession. In 2008, sales of Transit Connect in Europe dropped 27.8% to 56,500.
"From the point of its introduction, it was winning new customers," Kuzak said, because of a number of attributes, such as its car-like handling. "All of those attributes ... apply just as well for our commercial vehicle customers here in the U.S."

When the vehicle is running, a pair of RFID antennas, mounted in corrosion- and impact-resistant housings on the inside of the pickup box, scan the box for the items on a pre-programmed inventory list. The data is transmitted to a reader mounted inside the cab and displayed on the in-dash computer screen, alerting the driver if any inventoried tools are not loaded on the truck. "Tool Link increases productivity and saves money," said William Frykman, Ford Work Solutions product and business development manager. "It helps contractors and tradespeople guarantee they show up at the job site with the right tools for each job- and that they don't leave equipment behind."

The new 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 delivers the most power and refinement ever for a Ford SVT-tuned performance Mustang – and a few surprises, too.
“The 2010 Shelby GT500 demonstrates Ford’s continuing commitment to high-performance vehicles,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “In addition to the numerous performance and refinement improvements inside and out, the 2010 Shelby GT500 is an estimated 2 miles per gallon more fuel efficient on the highway.”
“We’re proud of the many enhancements that were developed jointly by the Ford and Shelby Automobiles team last year that we’ve now incorporated into the new 2010 Shelby GT500,” said Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby Automobiles. “Building on what we learned to create the Shelby GT500KR, this new car offers a great combination of power, handling and braking. It is truly a special car that is a great deal of fun to drive.”
Ford’s Special Vehicle Team used the gains made on the 40th anniversary edition Shelby GT500KR “King of the Road” Mustangs as the performance starting point and built from there. The design team, with a nod to the original Shelby Cobras from the 1960s, takes those design cues even further with nuanced improvements in both the coupe and convertible, each of which boasts a more-refined interior.
“Working together on the KR, the Ford and Shelby teams developed new systems to continually improve the iconic Mustang,” stated Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Automobiles. “Those lessons learned are incorporated into the 2010 Shelby GT500. This approach will help maintain Mustang’s leadership position at the front of the pack and make the ownership experience even more enjoyable.”
“The muscle car segment is becoming even more competitive,” said Jamal Hameedi, chief nameplate engineer for SVT. “We need to uphold the Mustang badge with honor, the Shelby badge with honor and most importantly the Ford badge with honor. The 2010 GT500 is the car that will do all of that.”

More horsepower, more refinement, more functionalityThe combination of added horsepower, refinement and functionality makes the 2010 Shelby GT500 a unique high-performance car. The 2010 Shelby GT500 delivers more horsepower and more torque than the outgoing model, thanks in part to advancements pioneered on the GT500KR.
The 2010 Shelby GT500 is powered by a supercharged and intercooled 5.4-liter dual overhead cam V-8 engine expected to produce 540 horsepower and 510 foot-pounds of torque. The redline is 6,250 rpm. The car’s aluminum power dome hood not only adds to the Shelby’s appearance, it helps cool the engine through a hood extractor.
The Shelby’s open-element air induction system features a conical air filter instead of a flat-panel closed system to reduce air restriction. This approach allows more air to be pumped through the engine, producing more power and increasing the engine’s efficiency.
A cold-air intake feeds the coolest air possible directly into the air box, helping further increase horsepower. The intake necessitated moving the Cobra snake badge to the other side of the grille to enable maximum airflow.
The twin-disc clutch on the six-speed manual transmission has been significantly upgraded, improving drivability and NVH. The discs on the 2010 Shelby GT500 are larger – 250 mm in diameter compared with 215 mm in diameter on the outgoing model – and made of copper and fiberglass to make them more robust.
A unique component of the twin-disc system is the control of the intermediate disc. Rather than floating, it instead has six straps that control the engagement of the clutch, improving drivability.
The 2010 Shelby GT500 offers customers improved straight-line acceleration, plus fuel savings when cruising on the highway in the top gears. Gears 1-4 remain the same, but fifth gear changes from .80 to .74 while sixth gear goes from .63 to .50, meaning that the 2010 Shelby GT500 will turn lower engine RPMs in those gears and deliver improved fuel efficiency. The new final drive ratio, from 3.31 to 3.55, enables the improved acceleration in lower gears while complementing the revised fifth and sixth gear ratios.
The Shelby’s distinct sounds will be apparent as always, though with new refinements, thanks to the work of the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) team. A patented resonator placed between the air filter and engine throttle body helps keep unwanted noise in check.
“You still hear the supercharger but not so that it’s intrusive,” said Kerry Baldori, chief functional engineer for SVT. “It’s the same with the exhaust. You want people to know you’re driving something special, but you don’t want an exhaust note that overpowers the whole interior.
“We spent a lot of time getting the right sound quality out of the exhaust so you get that nice, crisp Shelby sound outside and a pleasant sound inside the cabin. It’s a nice balance; one isn’t overpowering the other.”
Driving dynamics also are improved, thanks to SVT’s signature chassis tuning as well as new 19-inch Goodyear F1 Supercar tires and forged aluminum wheels on the 2010 Shelby GT500 coupe and 18s on the convertible.
Spring and dampers have been optimized for better roll control, giving customers more confidence when braking, accelerating or turning. The new chassis tuning takes its philosophy from the KR program, with a greater emphasis placed on primary body control.
The team also stiffened the steering shaft.

“All our changes were about making the car to respond as fast and as predictable as possible,” Hameedi said. “The 2010 Shelby GT500 conveys an athletic, confident feel. The shifter, clutch pedal, brake-pedal efforts and overall steering efforts are easier now. We wanted to make sure we had a nice, crisp short-throw shifter that was easy to go from gear to gear.”
The Goodyear F1 Supercar 19-inch tires have been upgraded, too. SVT members developed a “recipe” for the attributes and characteristics they wanted in the tire, which Goodyear’s team of engineers, designers and manufacturers brought to life. The result is better grip, better handling and better NVH properties, leading to a better customer experience.
The wheels themselves complement the high-performance nature of the 2010 Shelby GT500. The 19-inch wheels are forged aluminum wheels milled on both sides. The extra machining process creates “blade” spokes with very thin, yet strong, cross-sections. The spokes have a specific curve from the rim to the hub, not only for strength, but also to accentuate the offset and width of the tires.
The 2010 Shelby GT500 features AdvanceTrac, Ford’s stability control system with several options for performance. The default “on” mode accommodates every-day driving, and a Sport mode delivers for those wanting to put the Shelby GT500 through its paces on the track. The system also can be turned completely off, although the anti-lock brake system and other active safety systems remain in place. Standard safety equipment includes: dual stage front air bags, side-impact air bags and Ford’s Personal Safety System.
Numerous aerodynamic upgrades, including a redesigned splitter, were made to the front end of the 2010 Shelby GT500.
“We worked hard to get as much downforce with as little drag as possible,” Baldori said. “We worked to seal off the air that comes in the front so it can’t go underneath the car. We spent a lot time sealing components such as the radiator and intercoolor to get rid of all the leak paths.
“The result of this evolution of aerodynamics is we’ve increased downforce, reduced drag and improved the overall efficiency of the 2010 Shelby GT500.”
Directing the air so it’s used most efficiently was a painstaking process that ultimately will be rewarding to customers. The design of the front fascia and the car’s “flush” hood helps focus air flow. The top grille focuses air into the radiator, with a rubber flap inside the engine compartment helping to seal the system. The lower grille helps cool the intercooler. SVT engineers also went as far to block off specific diamonds in the front of the 2010 Shelby GT500’s distinctive grille to help maintain the correct cooling and aerodynamic balance.
A meaner, reskinned snake ready to take to the streetsThe 2010 Shelby GT500 is the most-robust design and most-distinctive model of the new 2010 Mustang lineup. “The design we chose was a ‘flush’ hood where the fascia defines the entire front of the vehicle,” Hameedi said. “That’s very hard to execute from an engineering standpoint, but it really sets the Shelby off as very, very different from the base Mustang.”
“This epitomizes the ultimate Mustang,” added George Saridakis, Exterior Design manager of the Mustang and Shelby GT500. “It’s all about power and expressing power.”
Saridakis said his team took a cue from the Shelby AC Cobra 427 with respect to the front grilles, which are gaping and appear ready to swallow the road.
Another obvious difference for the Shelby is the addition of racing stripes, which also will now be available on the convertible. “Racing stripes made their mark on 1960s-era Ford performance vehicles,” Hameedi notes. “That’s something we feel is a key part of the Shelby performance DNA – maybe more so than some of our competition.”
Rounding out the Shelby’s exterior modifications are the unique signature coiled Cobra badges on the front grille and front fenders, a more aggressive front splitter and lower-drag rear spoiler, which added to improved aerodynamic features, round out the exterior modifications. “We wanted the spoiler raked back aggressively to minimize drag, but we also have an integrated Gurney Flap that provides the downforce,” Saridakis said.
What’s inside counts with the 2010 Shelby GT500The base 2010 Mustang received a powerful new interior design. For the GT500, the interior design team members challenged themselves to raise the bar even higher to create the ultimate Shelby Mustang interior.
Using genuine materials such as real leather in all seats, real aluminum on the instrument panel and Alcantara inserts on the seats and steering wheel gave the appearance a precisely crafted, jewel-like yet functional feel. “You’ll definitely know you’re in a Shelby,” said Douglas Gaffka, Chief Designer, Shelby GT500.
The genuine aluminum finish panels have a unique-to-GT500 three-dimensional dimpled texture pattern inspired by racing clutch plates, braided hoses and cross-drilled racing brake rotors. The pattern has been painstakingly tuned to compensate for the compound curvature of the instrument panels. In addition, the “GT500” logo has been discretely engraved into the aluminum in front of the passenger as a nod to classic Shelby Mustangs of the 1960s.
This unique aluminum finish panel is fully encapsulated by an exquisite soft seamless TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin) instrument panel with a shape that resonates with Mustang’s powerful heritage. The center stack flows into the console and features a sub-flush shifter trim ring, flush cup holder door and lockable console stowage featuring the word “SHELBY” engraved in its Satin Liquid Chrome release button.
All 2010 Mustangs and Shelbys feature bright 360-degree rings surrounding the gauge cluster, uninterrupted by the steering column. These rings will come in chrome for the Mustang and a Satin Liquid Chrome finish for the GT500. This finish is featured throughout the interior. An intricate cobra is etched into the center of the aluminum steering wheel badge. The Shelby Cobra appears at startup on the navigation screen, and the familiar red “SVT” logo utilizes new ambient lighting to illuminate the door scuffplate.
“When customers drive this car, they’re not only going to be impressed by the performance and the Shelby heritage, but they’re going to see all these carefully designed details and know they’ve bought a well-crafted car,” Saridakis said.
Even the classic white shift knob – an icon of Shelby Mustang DNA from years past – received special attention. First, it had to be the traditional white. It also had to be specific to the Shelby. The answer was to combine the racing-stripes theme with the traditional “H” pattern found on shifters to create a one-of-a-kind knob. Like the exterior, the racing stripes wrap from end to end, encircling the knob.

That data packet is sent to Ford via an 800-number automatically dialed using the customer’s paired and operable mobile phone.
Ambient Lighting System with MyColor™ allows drivers to customize the interior lighting of the vehicle to suit their mood. The enhanced MyColor system features seven base colors – ice blue, purple, blue, orange, red, white and green. Customers also can create 125 custom colors by mixing the red-green-blue palette.

1. Fuel Economy

Ford is bringing affordable fuel economy to millions of drivers by delivering best-in-class or among the best fuel economy with every new vehicle introduced.
The new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid is rated as North America’s most fuel-efficient mid-size sedan with fuel economy of 4.6L/100km city and 5.4L/100km highway -- Toyota Camry: 5.7 city / 5.7 highway.
Ford is introducing industry-leading, fuel-saving EcoBoost engines on today’s vehicles for up to 20 per cent better fuel economy and up to 15 per cent fewer CO2 emissions versus larger-displacement engines.
We will be offering EcoBoost in Lincoln MKS and the Oakville-built Ford Flex this year.
Ford has also announced an aggressive new electric vehicle plan to bring a family of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles to market by 2012.
Ford is already putting into effect a major element of this electrification strategy with its strategic alliance with Canadian-based auto supplier Magna International to produce a new battery electric small car.

2. Quality

This month (January) the all-new 2009 Ford F-150 was named North American Truck of the Year at NAIAS.
In December, MOTOR TREND magazine named the F-150 the 2009 Motor Trend Truck of the Year™.
Ford quality is now on par with Honda and Toyota – and is consistently being recognized by important third-parties like J.D. Power and Associates’ Initial Quality Study.

3. Safety

Ford is leading in safety leadership with the most U.S. government 5-star safety ratings of any auto company and recently moving past Honda for the industry’s most Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) "Top Safety Picks".
For example, the 2009 Ford F-150 is the only pickup truck to earn both the government’s top 5-star crash-test ratings and the IIHS “Top Safety Pick" award.

4. Innovation
Ford is continuing to lead in vehicle connectivity by adding 911 Assist to Ford SYNC.
This year, we'll introduce new smart safety features, such as the industry-first MyKey technology that limits top speed and audio volume for teens and the first forward crash-avoidance system for mainstream vehicles.
Active Park Assist helps drivers to parallel park with the touch of a button and without ever touching the steering wheel. This feature will be available in mid-2009 on Lincoln MKS and the Oakville-built Lincoln MKT.

This weekend we attended the Detroit Auto Show as we do every year.

The Ford Motor Company unveiled the 2010 Ford Taurus at Detroit’s NAIAS, a complete redesign of the flagship sedan, and one that reaches us a full year ahead of schedule. What makes the timing so impressive are the new model’s high ambitions.

Ford F150 was named the North American Truck of the Year. It did, however, face some stiff competition. The all new 2009 F150 is a perennial favorite and can claim the top sales numbers for any vehicle in North America for 27 straight years. It is also the top selling Canadian pickup for 42 straight years.

The Truck of the Year Award is just one of many prestigious honors the F150 has had after recently being named Motor Trend “Truck of the Year” and “Truck of Texas” by the Texas Auto Writers Association.
For 2009 the F150 has received five star front and side impact ratings from the NHTSA and is a Top Pick for the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).

Ford also had the SVT Raptor on Display this is an Awesome Off Road F-150 The Raptor goes on sale in the summer of 2009 with the base, 5.4L three-valve engine. The 6.2L becomes available the following winter.

There were way more Electric and Hybrid Vehicles this year. Some Manufacturers had up to 6 vehicle lines that they will be offering in Hybrid or Electric. Downstairs there was a full track that Visitors could have a ride in the Electric and Hybrid vehicles including the Ford Escape and the All New 2010 Hybrid Fusion that gets up to 2 times better fuel economy better than it's Competitors.

Ford Motor Company announced an ambitious and daring strategy to transform the way America drives: “We are launching an aggressive plan to bring pure battery electric vehicles as well as next-generation hybrids and plug-in hybrids to the market quickly,” says Bill Ford Jr., the company’s executive chairman, adding that “our electrification strategy is not a test program.”

The company has already produced a prototype, based on the Focus platform, and allowed journalists to take it for a spin through downtown Detroit. By next year, Ford will offer a full-battery–operated van to commercial fleets, and by 2011, the first of Ford’s passenger vehicles — a small car developed with world-class supplier Magna International — will be ready for American drivers. Ford will start out by producing 10,000 cars.

Partnerships like the one with Magna inform Ford’s strategy, which will focus on helping the country’s infrastructure to evolve, improving battery technology, and working with the government to adapt policy. In total, the automaker will produce four different electric vehicles over the next four years, each expected to reach up to 100 miles on a single battery charge. Every year we have a booth at the Landscape Ontario Congress. The show was a real success we had amazing attendance with Landscapers from all over Canada including US and International Visitors. This is the Largest show of its kind in Canada with over 12000 visitors each year we had over 200 people visit our booth alone.

This year we had on display a 2009 Ford F-650 with a Eloquip Landscaper Dump Body. The F-650 really attracted a lot of attention with its Chrome Grille fully loaded interior and shiny aluminium body. This truck was a real value at $63,500.00 including the Dump Body.

The Landscapers we talked with were looking forward to another busy year with many of them still working on projects that were not completed in the Fall. Of course with the snow we have had for the last 2 years they are very busy all winter long. In our Booth we had the support of Colin Ball, Ruth Anne Lust and Kim Williams this year in our booth we worked hard but all had a lot of fun as well. It is hard to imagine the head of any automaker -- foreign or domestic -- being optimistic about 2009. But Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally is downright ebullient.
While he is all too aware of the dangers posed by the deepening recession, Mulally says Ford's decision to pass on the initial federal bailout of the U.S. auto industry has resonated with many Americans. The challenge now is getting them to come into the showroom and buy a Ford car or truck.
"This has turned out to be quite an opportunity for us, because it has put a real spotlight on Ford," Mulally told The Detroit News in an interview Monday. "We just need to continue to tell our story."

General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC will spend the first three months of 2009 trying to implement restructuring actions that will assure their long-term viability -- a condition of the $17.4 billion loan package President George W. Bush approved earlier this month so they could stave off bankruptcy. That will mean wresting significant concessions from workers, suppliers, creditors and investors. They also will have to seek approval for major expenditures of $100 million or more.
Ford is bound by no such restrictions. The automaker is only required to return to Washington in March with GM and Chrysler to provide an update of its turnaround efforts.
But Mulally said the company is working closely with Washington. Congress and the incoming Obama administration want a reorganization of the entire U.S. auto industry -- not just GM and Chrysler --and Ford still hopes to secure a $9 billion line of credit from the government as a hedge against a worsening economy.
Industry watchers say Ford's decision to forgo emergency federal loans has given it an advantage over its Detroit rivals, but only if Ford can gain enough traction in the market to stay off the public dole.
"They might have a competitive advantage if things turn around," said David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor. "The problem is that, if sales remain as poor as they've been for the past couple of months, it's going to drain their pot, too. If things stay like they are, they're going to be in the sewer with everybody else."
Ford has sidestepped that fate largely because of a $23 billion financing package Mulally secured shortly after taking over as CEO in late 2006 that gave the automaker a sizable cash cushion. To stay out, he says Ford needs more than money; it needs the American people to fall in love with its cars and trucks again.
"The fact that we obtained financing for this transformation is one key piece, but there are a number of pieces to the transformation plan that are very unique and that differentiate Ford," Mulally said.
He names several factors that he sees as key differentiators between Ford and its Detroit rivals: the company's decision to sell its foreign brands and concentrate on fixing the Blue Oval; its efforts to consolidate its global operations and focus them on that goal; the progress made on quality and safety and new products like the fleet of small, fuel-efficient cars that will begin arriving from Europe in a little more than a year.
Mulally cited recent surveys by J.D. Power and Associates and Consumer Reports that put Ford's quality on par with the best Japanese automakers as "proof points" of the progress Ford has made.
"We are competing with the very best in the world," he said. "That is a very marketable, very exciting development."
Ford does not expect auto sales to rebound in 2009, but sees an opportunity to steal market share from its struggling competitors. Over the past two months, Ford has gained a point of U.S. market share after yielding share to foreign rivals for the better part of two decades.
To sustain that gain, Mulally said Ford needs to play offense.
"We're going to use every medium we can. It's all about getting the message out," he said. "It's going to help people know that they've got great choices with Ford -- that we're well on our way, that we're financially viable, that we've got great products, a great production system and that we're making tremendous progress."
Mulally is eager to enlist employees, dealers and suppliers in that effort. But Wall Street says he also must hit them up for the same kind of concessions that GM and Chrysler will have to negotiate under the terms of the federal loans if it is to remain competitive.
Ford is confident that the UAW, at least, will give the automaker any deal the union gives the other two Detroit automakers.
That confidence is well-founded, said UAW member Brian Pannebecker, a worker at Ford's axle plant in Sterling Heights.
"There is a special relationship between Ford and the UAW, and that's largely due to the (Ford) family," he said. "There's a lot of loyalty there. A lot of workers put their 401(k) money into Ford stock. They want to see the company succeed."

New Lincolns will park themselves

Ford Motor Co. said Monday that it will introduce a new automatic parallel parking system as an option on some Lincoln models next year, aiming to match rival offerings from Lexus and other luxury brands.
Ford's system, called Active Park Assist, would be the first such offering from a domestic manufacturer.
It is slated to debut on the Lincoln MKS sedan and MKT crossover next year, and will be introduced at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in January.
Unlike the Lexus system, which uses cameras, the Lincoln system uses sensors mounted on the front and rear of the vehicle to guide it into a parking space. Ford claims its technology leapfrogs its competitors' because it does not require the driver to select the parking space manually.
On the Lexus system, drivers must first line their car up with the vehicle in front of the place they want to park. They must then push a button to activate the system and use a touch-screen display to select the parking space. Once they have done that, the car steers itself into that space while they control the gas pedal and brakes.
Ford's system eliminates several of those steps. When drivers wish to park, they simply push a button to activate the system and cruise the street until their car finds a suitable parking space. When it does, the system tells them to stop, asks them to confirm that they wish to park in that space and then uses the vehicle's electronic power steering to guide it in as they control the gas pedal and brakes.

It works on hills

"It's fast and simple to use and more accurate," said Ali Jammoul, chief engineer of chassis and steering systems for Ford North America. "There is no driver interface. It does it automatically."
The Ford system prevents drivers from trying to park in spaces that are too tight for their vehicle. And, unlike rival offerings, it will work on hills.
Analyst Erich Merkle of Crowe Horwath LLP said parallel parking systems are fast becoming a requirement for luxury brands.
"You're going to see it become more prevalent on luxury vehicles," he said, adding that he expects Cadillac and others to introduce similar systems soon. "It's an incredibly competitive market, and consumers are asking for more and more -- and this is one of those features consumers are going to want to see. You can never have too much anymore."
The Lexus system debuted in 2006 on the Lexus LS460 L and is still available only on that model. The car carries a base price of $73,585, and the parking system is part of an $8,530 option package.
Ford has not yet announced pricing for its system.
The Dearborn automaker is devoting considerable resources to bolstering the Lincoln brand, which it sees as critical to its success in the U.S. market. Once Lincolns were just rebadged Ford cars and light trucks, but newer Lincolns now boast unique styling and features. Cutting-edge technology is a big part of the Lincoln equation, Ford said.

Debut set for next year

It began working on the parking assist system with supplier partner Valeo SA about 18 months ago.
"We think it is best in class," Jammoul said, noting that the system can fit into any space that is at least 20 percent larger than the vehicle itself, while Lexus' system requires a space that is more than 50 percent larger. "We find tighter spots, and we also park closer to the curb and at less of an angle. The system has to do it better than you can. That was our objective."

Ford tops safe car list

WASHINGTON — The insurance industry named dozens of new cars and trucks, led by Ford Motor Co. and its Volvo subsidiary, to its annual list of the safest vehicles Tuesday, helped by the increased use of anti-rollover technology.
Ford and Volvo had 16 vehicles in the 2009 model year on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's list of the safest new cars, followed by Honda Motor Co. with 13 vehicles.
Seventy-two cars, trucks and SUVs received the top safety pick designation for 2009, more than double the number of vehicles in the 2008 model year and three times the number in 2007.
“The sheer number of this year's winners indicates that automakers have made huge strides to improve crash protection,” said Institute president Adrian Lund.

The selected vehicles are the best in protecting people in front, side and rear crash tests based on institute evaluations during the year. The vehicles are required to have electronic stability control, or ESC, to qualify for the award.
IIHS said electronic stability control is now standard equipment on virtually all new SUVs and three-quarters of passenger cars for the 2009 model year. ESC is standard on more than one-third of 2009 pickups.
Ford was led by the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan midsize cars with optional ESC; the Ford F-150 pickup, Ford Edge and Ford Flex midsize sport utility vehicles; and the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner small SUVs. The list also included the Mazda Tribute, which has the same underpinnings as the Escape and Mariner.
Ford CEO Alan Mulally argued last week in Washington that the automaker had made safety strides when he testified along with other Big Three executives seeking massive government aid.
“Every year, we're going to improve the quality, we're going to improve the fuel efficiency, we're going to improve the safety, and we're going to keep improving the productivity so we can offer the consumer the very best value,” Mr. Mulally told a House committee.
Honda and its Acura unit had vehicles in nearly every category, including top-sellers such as the Honda Accord; the Honda Civic 4-door with optional ESC; and the Acura MDX and RDX midsize SUVs; and the Honda Fit with optional ESC. The Fit is the first mini-car to earn the safety award.
Volkswagen AG and its Audi brand had nine vehicles on the list, including the Volkswagen Jetta and Passat and the Audi A3, A4 and A6.
General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. both had eight vehicles on the list. GM's included the Cadillac CTS and the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook large SUVs.
Toyota's top performers were the Toyota Corolla with optional ESC, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra and Scion xB.
Using the awards, consumers can compare vehicles without having to review results from multiple tests. Automakers pay close attention to the institute's findings and frequently note positive ratings in television commercials.
The institute has advocated for an early adoption of anti-rollover technology such as ESC ahead of a government requirement for the systems by the 2012 model year.
Electronic stability control senses when a driver may lose control and automatically applies brakes to individual wheels to keep the vehicle stable and avoid a rollover. It helps motorists avoid skidding across icy or slick roads or keep control when swerving to avoid an unexpected object in the road.
IIHS said Chrysler LLC was the only major automaker that did not receive a single award. They said Chrysler could have picked up five awards if the head restraints had been improved in the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring, the Sebring convertible and the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country.
Chrysler spokesman Cole Quinnell said he could not comment on whether the head restraints might be upgraded in the future. He said Chrysler vehicles are equipped with a variety of safety features and the institute's results “are just one of the sources of information about a vehicle's crash performance.”

Cue Neil Diamond for a chorus or two of “Coming to America.” Mid to late-summer 2009, a new Ford --at least new to us--will be imported. Not that imports are anything new, even for Ford, which has been bringing cars to the U.S. from overseas since the 1950s.

But this one’s really new. It’s the Ford Transit Connect.

It’s new because it’s the first time for Ford to bring a small tradesman-type truck/van to the States. But more surprisingly, the Ford Transit Connect is made in Turkey. As in the country in the Middle East. Ford has a plant in Ankara where the Transit has been made since 2002 for export mainly to Europe.

Built for European use, it’s built to European dimension. The Transit Direct’s wheelbase is 114.6 inches, much shorter than Ford’s conventional American E-Series van which measures a whopping 138 inches. And instead of that vehicle’s big V-8, the Transit Connect is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 136 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque and is rated at 19 city/24 highway mpg. Don’t ask what the E-Series gets. It’s too heavy for EPA mileage rating.

The Transit Connect won’t be in direct competition with the E-Series van or the E-Series’ equivalents from Chevrolet and GMC. Rather it will match up against the Chevy HHR or Honda Element. Advantage: Transit Connect with its 143 cu ft of cargo volume and maximum payload of 1,600 pounds. The Chevy has about 62 cu ft and the Honda 74.6 cu ft of cargo volume, and neither—as technically automobiles—has a payload listed. Neither has the height inside that a Transit has either.

The Ford Transit Connect, not to sound too much like a cheerleader, sounds like the right product at the right time. And if the origin seems a little odd, consider that the British trade magazine Fleet News has called the Transit Direct the “second most reliable model” for 2007 and 2008. That’s not faint praise considering that number one was also a Ford, the larger Ford Transit van.

It can’t happen fast enough for Ford, of course, even it means that some of its income is made overseas. After all, as Ford products, the profits are coming to America too. Sing it, Niel.

MANUFACTURING WOES: Daimler Trucks boss Chris Patterson says the failing bottom line, not emotion, is the deciding factor

Local roots run deep for the man in whose hands lies the fate of workers at Sterling Truck in St. Thomas. But local loyalties do not make a difference when it comes to deciding which plants remain open and which close down, said Chris Patterson, chief executive of Daimler Trucks North America. It is all about the bottom line -- and that states clearly Sterling Truck will be shut down in March, he said.

Patterson was born and raised in Toronto, but his family hails from Goderich -- his parents retired back to Goderich after leaving Toronto and still live there. He also graduated with an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario in 1978.

"We do not discriminate based on lineage," Patterson said. "It is brutal. . . . We cannot stay with Sterling longer because we have an emotional connection." Daimler is ending the Sterling Truck line -- also closing a plant in Portland, Ore. -- as its Freightliner and Western Star brands will fill the void.

Patterson will sit down with Canadian Auto Workers union officials tomorrow to hear a plea from workers to keep the plant open and they will come armed with pledges of financial support from the federal and provincial governments.

"We never had any dialogue on this," said Jim Stanford, CAW chief economist. "There are all kinds of things we can do. The province has a $1-billion fund, the federal government a $450-million innovation fund. They did not even try and that is outrageous."

In 2003, a federal and provincial government bailout and CAW concessions helped save the International Truck plant in Chatham from a planned shutdown and more than 800 workers are still there.

But Patterson will not ask for a bailout and bristled at the International example.
"I am very aware of that situation. I am not prepared to comment on the fact our government used our tax dollars to bail out a competitor that was failing. It is not a positive comment about our government's industrial policy. "If they (International) had gotten out of the heavy truck business, perhaps this (Sterling closing) may not have happened."

Closing a plant is nothing new to Patterson. He shut down a Kenworth plant in B.C. during the 1980s and a Freightliner plant also in B.C. in 1992.

As for the Sterling plant's future, "we will be happy to entertain offers to purchase . . . We cannot make money with it at this juncture."

Daimler took over the Sterling truck line from Ford about 11 years ago and since then tried to build the brand, but it never caught on, he added. In fact Sterling has about six per cent of the market in the U.S., and it would need twice those numbers to be viable, he said.

Daimler stated in a release the closings will cost $600-million and save $900-million a year by 2011.

Patterson also rejected suggestions a new plant in Saltillo, Mexico, will replace the Sterling trucks now being made in St. Thomas. Freightliner's new Cascadia truck will be made in Mexico, he said.

The closing is also not an issue of unionized wages, about $30 an hour at Sterling, or the fact the St. Thomas plant endured two strikes in its history. "That has zero, nothing to do with it," said Patterson. "The state of labour relations has not influenced things one way or the other."

The plant closings in St. Thomas and Portland as well as other hourly and salaried cuts will trim about 4,500 workers from Sterling workforce in the U.S, and Canada.

Ford second to none in quality: study

A new study says that when it comes to initial quality, no automaker performs better than Ford. According to the 2008 U.S. Global Quality Research System study, Ford's initial quality now equals that of Toyota and Honda- representing a statistical tie for top place with the Japanese automakers. The study represents an 8 percent increase in quality over last year, and says that each new car and truck launched with improved quality versus it predecessor. How is the quality determined? It's an interesting measure called the "Things Gone Wrong" rating- resulting in a 'TGW' number per 1,000 vehicles during the first three months of ownership. Fords vehicles averaged 1,284 TGW items, statistically equivalent to the 1,250 TGW rating level of Toyota and Honda.

"Last year we tied with Toyota, and this year our quality performance is as good as industry-leading Honda's too," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas. "Our world-class quality is one of the most important aspects of our turnaround in North America. This consistently strong quality improvement should offer today's customer renewed confidence, setting the stage for important new products like Ford Flex."Ford earned extra honors from the study in the areas of interior trim, seats and appearance- as well as paint, vehicle engineering and electrical / entertainment systems. A total for 15 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury vehicles are now ranked in the top three of their respective segments for either TGW performance, customer satisfaction or both.

Ford to Receive a 10 Million Dollar Grant to Develop Plug In Hybrid Technology

Ford Motor Company is set to receive a $10 million grant from the United States Department of Energy to be spent on plug-in hybrid research and development. The government is funding half of Ford’s three-year plug-in development and demonstration program that currently has 20 plug-in hybrid vehicles on test.

According to the automaker, the three-year program is designed to demonstrate plug-in hybrids to consumers, as well as serve as a developmental test-bed for the untested technology. Ford has been working on a fleet of plug-ins with Southern California Edison, the Electric Power Research Institute, Johnson Controls-Saft and Michigan’s DTE Energy.

Ford is currently using the Edge and Escape SUVs as test-beds for plug-in hybrids. More details of the government’s grant are expected to be released tomorrow when an official announcement is made.

Programmable key will rein in teen drivers

So you think junior is a little too lead-footed when he drives the family car? Starting next year, Ford Motor Co. will give you the power to do something about it.

The company will roll out a new feature on many 2010 models that can limit teen drivers to 80 m.p.h. (128 km/h), using a computer chip in the key.

Parents also have the option of programming the teen's key to limit the audio system's volume, and to sound continuous alerts if the driver doesn't wear a seat belt.

"Our message to parents is, hey, we are providing you some conditions to give your new drivers that may allow you to feel a little more comfortable in giving them the car more often," said Jim Buczkowski, Ford's director of electronic and electrical systems engineering.

The feature, called "MyKey," will be standard on an unspecified number of Ford models when the 2010 cars and trucks come out late next summer. The feature will spread to the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineup as models are updated, spokesman Wes Sherwood said.

Ford arrived at the 80 m.p.h limit even though freeway speed limits are lower in most states because it wanted to leave a margin in case an unusual situation arises, Buczkowski said. In some states, freeway speed limits are above 70 m.p.h., Sherwood said.

"Just lopping it off at exactly 70 m.p.h. was felt to be too limiting," Buczkowski said.

The company already uses computer chips in its keys to prevent thefts. The car won't start unless it recognizes the chip in the key.

"It's making use of existing technology, and through the magic of software, we're able to build features on top of the features we already have," Buczkowski said.

In addition to speed limits, MyKey also will limit the volume of the audio system, and it will sound a six-second chime every minute if seat belts are not fastened. The chime sounds for adult drivers, too, but ends after five minutes to avoid annoying adults who adamantly don't want to wear seat belts, Buczkowski said.

Parents also have the option of having the car sound a chime if the teen exceeds 45, 55 or 65 m.p.h.

Ford said its market research shows 75 per cent of parents like the speed and audio limits, but as you might expect, 67 per cent of teens don't like them.

Danisha Williams, a 16-year-old senior at Southfield-Lathrup High School in suburban Detroit, said she's against the idea.

"I wouldn't want my parents to have that much control over how I'm driving," she said. "If your parents are holding your hand, you're never going to learn.''

Brittany Hawthorne, 17, another Southfield-Lathrup senior, said there may be emergency situations where she'd have to drive more than 80, possibly to accelerate to avoid a crash.

Ford's research shows that parents would be more likely to let teens use their vehicles with the system, Sherwood said, and if it gets them the car more often, the number of teens objecting drops by nearly half.

A top official from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group funded by the auto insurance industry that is pushing to raise the minimum driving age to 17 or 18, found the key intriguing. IIHS says car crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers.

"Research we've done has shown that speeding is a major factor in teen crashes, especially novice teen drivers," said Anne McCartt, the institute's senior vice president for research. "So I think a system that tries to correct the speeding behavior has the potential to improve safety.''

More than 5,000 U.S. teens die each year in car crashes. The rate of crashes, fatal and nonfatal, per mile driven for 16-year-old drivers is almost 10 times the rate for drivers ages 30 to 59, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

We like that the Ford had the lowest base price, the highest real payload number, a towing capacity we know (for a fact) is quite conservative, and has one of the most sophisticated and high-tech twin-turbo diesel engines around. That's not to say there isn't plenty to love about the Cummins Ram or the Duramax Silverado HD too, but in the end having the truck look as different as possible from the half-ton version seems to tip the scales in the Super Duty's direction.

United States Senate Approves $25 Billion Automotive Industry Loans

The Detroit News is reporting that the United States Senate has approved a $25 billion dollar loan for the automotive industry to re-build factories and produce more fuel efficient vehicles. In a 78 to 12 vote, the bill is expected to be signed by President Bush before the current government's budget expires tomorrow. Talk about last minute, right? General Motors spokesman, Greg Martin, stated the loans "will help speed the transition to cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles". Automakers will have 25 years to repay the loans and have the choice to defer repayment for up to five years. The lay also states that since they feature sub-investment grade credit, for every $1 billion the manufacturers borrow, they will have to save more than $100 million. Ford Motor Company also made a statement regarding the loans, s is an important first step to providing access to capital for important investments in the future at a time when the capital markets are distressed".

York: Ford best placed among Big Three

DETROIT (Reuters) - Jerry York, an adviser to Tracinda Corp, which has a $1 billion investment in Ford Motor Co (F.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), said he believed the automaker was better positioned in a tough market than its U.S. rivals. York, speaking at the Reuters Autos Summit on Monday, said that Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally has brought a "maniacal" focus to the automaker's restructuring. "Ford right now is looking fairly clean," York said. "That's not to say it's a walk in the park. It's a tough, ugly industry right now and all three have a lot of work to do." Tracinda, billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian's investment vehicle, began investing actively in Ford shares in April and holds a 6.5 percent stake in the automaker. York declined to comment on any future investment in Ford by Tracinda.
York said that Chrysler LLC CBS.UL, the No. 3 U.S.-based automaker now controlled by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, is in the "toughest situation" and it was possible that only two of three U.S. automakers would survive the deep U.S. auto industry downturn. "They don't have the diversification in the markets that GM and Ford have," he said. "It's possible we could end up with two."

Daimler Trucks Opens Global Hybrid Center

STUTTGART/KAWASAKI - August 28, 2008: Daimler Trucks inaugurated its new Global Hybrid Center at Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) in Kawasaki. Located within the company’s R&D facilities, the Center will be the worldwide hub for Daimler Trucks’ hybrid development. A ceremony was held today to officially open the Center. MFTBC is an integral part of the Daimler Trucks division of Daimler AG, and one of Asia’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers.
“The establishment of the Global Hybrid Center at MFTBC shows the increasing focus of Daimler Trucks and Mitsubishi Fuso on developing hybrid commercial vehicles,” said Dr. Eike Böhm, MFTBC Vice President of Product Engineering. “We believe the market for hybrids will expand more rapidly in the future, given the need to further reduce vehicle emissions as well as fuel consumption. The new Center will concentrate our efforts in developing clean, efficient hybrid commercial vehicles to meet market needs now and in the future.”
According to Dr. Böhm, the role of the new Global Hybrid Center is to direct and synchronize Daimler Trucks hybrid development activities on a global basis. All of Daimler Trucks hybrid activities will be aligned under the Center, including regional hybrid personnel at Daimler Trucks divisions MFTBC, Mercedes-Benz Trucks and Daimler Trucks North America LLC. A total of 50 people will be affiliated with the Center.
Mr. Fumio Akikawa has been named as Director of the Global Hybrid Center. Mr. Akikawa, a 35-year automotive and truck industry expert, also will continue in his current role as Director of Powertrain Development for MFTBC. MFTBC was chosen as the location for the Center because of the company’s history and expertise in hybrid vehicle innovation. Mitsubishi Fuso has been developing hybrid vehicles for over 10 years and today offers fuel efficient, low emissions products like the Canter Eco Hybrid light-duty truck and the Aero Star Eco Hybrid bus for the Japan market. The company has also developed the Canter Eco-D, a concept hybrid light-duty dump truck. Already, MFTBC had been serving as the hybrid competence center for Daimler Trucks. The founding of the Global Hybrid Center expands this role and creates a formal organizational structure for coordinating hybrid development on a global basis. With the opening of the new Center, Mitsubishi Fuso also announced it will double the number of its dedicated hybrid engineers to about 35 people.
Hybrid Fleet Test Now Underway in EuropeThe opening of the Global Hybrid Center comes as Daimler Trucks and Mitsubishi Fuso has launched Europe’s largest fleet test of hybrid trucks. Mitsubishi Fuso in Europe has presented ten Canter Eco Hybrids to eight customers in London. The three-year evaluation will examine the use of the 7.5-ton hybrid trucks by customers and demonstrate the diesel-electric hybrid drive's high level of efficiency. The vehicles in the test could consume up to 15 percent less fuel than conventional diesel vehicles, and also significantly reduce CO2 emissions. The Canter Eco Hybrid’s performance will be documented in a variety of applications, including frequent stop-and-go delivery in the heart of London, as well as longer runs between stores and warehouses. The eight customers involved in the fleet test are Amey, DHL, Hill Hire, Ringway, Royal Mail, Scottish and Southern, Tesco, and TNT. The vehicles used in the test are tailored for European requirements and include hybrid systems with electric motor and the Euro 4 power train of the series-produced 7.5-ton Fuso Canter. They will be equipped with a new measuring system to collect performance data and will be serviced by two specialized Mercedes-Benz service centers located in the London metropolitan area.
“Shaping Future Transportation” The opening of the Global Hybrid Center and the start of the Mitsubishi Fuso Europe hybrid test are two more important milestones in the “Shaping Future Transportation” initiative of Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses. “Shaping Future Transportation” is the name of the global initiative of Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses to redouble ongoing efforts to achieve a major reduction in the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of commercial vehicles. • Fuel consumption increases dramatically as speed increases, so cruise control can be a great tool for speed management. On a truck with excellent aerodynamics, a driver can save up to 1.5 percent by driving 1.6 Kmh slower, and up to 8 percent by driving 8 Kmh slower. On a truck with less aerodynamic features, a driver can save up to 3 percent by driving 1.6 Kmh slower and up to 15 percent by driving 8 Kmh slower
• Throttling back 8 Kmh can result in a fuel savings of up to 15 percent
• Reduce stops
• Avoid idling
• Manage speed changes and routes
Environmental
Where you operate your trucks can also have a significant impact on fuel consumption.
Climate: Fuel efficiency improves about 2 percent with every 10 degree increase in ambient temperature. However, warm weather means that air conditioning is used more, which increases fuel usage. Chilly temperatures mean that trucks take longer to warm up, need to idle more, and create more aerodynamic drag due to increased air moisture and wind.
Route Planning: The route you travel can also have an impact on fuel. Traveling on flat major route highways as much as possible
– instead of mountainous roadways, suburban routes, or stopand-go urban streets – can save up to 165 percent on fuel. Sitting in stop-and-go traffic can use up to one-third of a tank. Plus, keeping track of road closures will avoid unnecessary idling, and traveling roads with less traffic can avoid frequent speed changes.
Fleet Management
The last factor to consider when looking for ways to keep costs down is fleet management. There are several easy business decisions you can make that reduce fuel consumption and costs.
Monitor your fuel usage. Use software to monitor L/100 km, and use engine data reports to understand what is affecting fuel economy. Also, remember to factor payload in your calculations: 1 percent for every 1,000 lbs. Make realistic delivery promises to your customers. By avoiding “run hard” situations in which your drivers need to deliver cargo quickly, you can improve fuel economy and safety. Another way to monitor logistics is to continually work with shippers to reduce loading and waiting times. Help drivers improve their habits, and keep them happy.
Consider offering an incentive or bonus to the drivers with the best fuel efficiency numbers. Another option is reducing the maximum allowable fleet speed. Keep all aerodynamics parts and devices maintained. Also, use maintenance tracking software to monitor the last time tires, filters, and other parts have been changed. Ford EcoBoost Engine For F-150 To Produce Significant Power Gains Over Current Model

Advanced Engine Design Manager, Brett Hinds of Ford Motor Company believes the 3.5 liter six cylinder EcoBoost engine that will find its way into the Ford F-150 pickup truck in 2010 will produce "significantly more than 340 horse power and 340 foot pounds of torque" which beats the current 300 horse power 5.4 eight cylinder currently offered with the pickup truck. The new EcoBoost option is also believed to be equipped with two turbochargers, which prove to be very fuel efficient while producing more power. There is also a chance that the EcoBoost engine may find itself under the hood of the re-designed 2010 Ford Mustang but that has yet to be confirmed. Truck owners, get excited.

Coming Soon Ford Transit Connect

Lots of businesses and even regular folk have a need for a vehicle with plenty of space inside to carry stuff that isn't necessarily incredibly heavy. For those applications, something like a full-size van is just overkill and results in higher than necessary operating costs. Over the years, Chevy, Dodge and Ford have all offered cargo van versions of their mini-vans for plumbers, caterers and anyone else that didn't need the extra two rows of seats but wanted more storage space. With the demise of the Windstar/Freestar in late 2006, and new, stricter fuel economy regulations on the horizon, Ford found a new solution in its European lineup. Several years ago it launched the Transit Connect, a smaller, tall roofed front-wheel-drive van. At 6'8" tall, the Transit Connect easily fits in a garage, but the low floor provides lots of room for racks of tools, parts or whatever else the owner might need to haul around. It will be available with either just the two front seats or with an additional second row bench seat for three. In two seater form, the Connect has 143 cubic ft. of storage space that is easily accessible from either of the two sliding doors or the 180o fold out rear doors. The front wheels will be driven by a 2.0L four cylinder gas engine in the US version since Ford is trying to keep the Transit affordable and skipping the diesels for now. It's currently estimating 19/24 mpg city/highway, which is about 2 mpg better than the Chevy and Dodge cargo vans. Ford will start bringing the Transit Connect to the US in mid-2009 from an assembly plant in Turkey and pricing has yet to be announced.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif., Aug. 15, 2008 - Kicking off the weekend marking the celebrated Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Lincoln today confirms it will produce the Lincoln MKT, a premium, three-row luxury crossover based on a the well-received concept vehicle.
"The Lincoln MKT reinforces our commitment to further expand America's fastest-growing luxury brand, providing an all-new vehicle to the showroom that's been crafted and honed for a new kind of customer," said Mark Fields, Ford Motor Company's president of The Americas.
"The MKT will offer the comfort of a luxury sedan, the spaciousness and flexibility of a crossover and the performance of a sports sedan, courtesy of its EcoBoost engine," he added. "At the same time, this perfect blend of performance and power is elegantly wrapped in the refined design cues that have become synonymous with modern Lincolns."
The Lincoln MKT will build on a string of successful Lincoln products launched in recent years. The Lincoln MKX, a two-row crossover, and the Lincoln MKZ mid-size sedan have earned high praise from consumers and continue to gain share in their respective segments.
The flagship Lincoln MKS luxury sedan, introduced earlier this summer, has seen strong early sales, as well. Dynamic and clean-lined, the Lincoln MKS is the first production vehicle to embrace the strong new Lincoln design DNA. New Lincoln products, including the new MKT crossover, will feature this distinctive new Lincoln design language as well as industry-leading technologies.
The Lincoln MKT crossover will join the Lincoln lineup in calendar year 2009, along with an upgraded Lincoln MKZ mid-size sedan - plus an additional version of the flagship Lincoln MKS sedan powered by an EcoBoost engine.
In addition to a fuel-efficient 3.7-liter normally aspirated V-6 engine, the Lincoln MKT also will offer an EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 engine that will deliver an estimated 340 horsepower and 340 lb.-ft. of torque.
The Lincoln MKT will join other vehicles early in the EcoBoost engine technology rollout, including the Lincoln MKS luxury sedan and Ford Flex.
EcoBoost engines feature turbocharged direct injection technology and deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy and 15 percent improved emissions than larger-displacement engines. In the Lincoln MKS and MKT, for instance, the EcoBoost engine delivers the fuel economy of a V-6 engine but the performance feel of a V-8.
Ford is making a significant commitment to EcoBoost engine technology. Within five years, the company plans to produce 750,000 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles annually - in vehicles ranging from small cars to full-size pickups in markets around the world.
"EcoBoost engine technology is another symbol of what luxury means today," Fields said. "Lincolns should drive as beautifully as they look, delivering as much refinement on the road as their designs do even while standing perfectly still."
Taking cues from its performance sedan sibling and the MKT concept vehicle first shown at the North American International Auto Show in January, the Lincoln MKT will feature the distinctive bow-wave, double-wing grille; clean, uncluttered surfaces; powerful, dynamic beltline; chamfered surface running parallel to the beltline; significant C-pillar that smoothly transitions into the cantilevered roof and a powerful roofrail.
"Embracing the same spirit as the concept, the Lincoln MKT's design represents harmony in motion, balancing sculptured shapes and contours traditionally associated with beautiful cars on a crossover vehicle that offers the luxury of space and efficient, powerful performance," said Peter Horbury, Ford's executive director of Design for The Americas.
The MKT will provide seating for up to seven passengers and all the latest in-car connectivity technologies that customers have come to expect from Lincoln.
This includes a new version of SYNC, the company's industry-leading connectivity technology that fully integrates customers' Bluetooth technologies including mobile phones and MP3 players.
Plus, next-generation navigation system technology and new safety and security features will be available, including the new Blind Spot Monitoring and Cross Traffic Alert System.
Working in conjunction with the blind spot information system, Cross Traffic Alert warns the driver of impending traffic while backing out of a parking spot. When cross traffic is approaching, an indicator light provides a warning in the corresponding outside mirror, as well as an audible warning.
Cross Traffic Alert utilizes the blind spot system's two multibeam radar modules, which are packaged in the rear quarter panels - one per side. These modules identify when a vehicle enters the defined blind spot zone; an indicator light provides a warning in the outside mirror corresponding to the side in which the vehicle is approaching.
The system can pick up an object moving at up to 18 miles per hour within a 65-foot range - or three parking spaces - from either the left or right side of the vehicle.
The Lincoln MKT will be manufactured in Ford Motor Company's Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada. Additional product details will be made available closer to the Lincoln MKT's launch.

Ford Flex hits Safety Pinnacle with 5-Star Ratings

Flex earns U.S. government's top 5-star crash ratings for all four front- and side-impact tests - adding to Ford's leading number of 5-star vehicles.

The daringly designed and fuel-efficient seven-passenger crossover continues to draw praise and customer interest.

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 5, 2008 - The 2009 Ford Flex has earned five-star frontal- and side-impact crashworthiness ratings, the highest possible scores, in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests.
The results for Ford's newest full-size crossover are better than the Toyota Highlander's and include class-leading four-star rollover ratings for both the front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.
"The 5-star ratings for the Flex are evidence of Ford's overall safety commitment. In fact, we have produced more 5-star-rated vehicles than any other automaker," said Susan Cischke, Ford's senior vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. "The Flex offers it all: a head-turning design, top safety ratings, unsurpassed highway fuel efficiency in its segment, power, spaciousness, comfort and great features."
Flex safety standard
Flex, which went on sale this summer, has a full array of standard safety equipment.
This includes dual front air bags, headliner mounted side curtain air bags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, Ford-exclusive AdvanceTrac® with RSC® (Roll Stability Control™) and tire pressure monitoring system.
Flex gets some of its core strength from the use of lightweight aluminum-coated boron steel - one of the strongest weld-able materials - in the body structure. The use of high-strength steel in the B-pillars is only part of the Flex's robust safety profile. Ford engineers also located the side door intrusion beams to help manage and absorb energy during side impact crashes.
"Flex safety is built on a solid foundation - the platform of the 5-star rated Ford Taurus and Taurus X," said Gary Boes, Flex chief engineer.
How the Crash Ratings Work
NHTSA's frontal collision ratings are determined by placing crash-test dummies in the driver's seat and front-passenger seat and securing them with the vehicle's safety belts. Vehicles are then crashed into a fixed barrier at 35 mph, which is equivalent to a head-on collision between two similar vehicles that are moving at 35 mph. The 5-star rating attained by Flex indicates a 10 percent or less chance of serious injury to a belted occupant in the front seat.
Side-impact crash testing represents an intersection-type collision with a 3,015 pound barrier moving at 38.5 mph into the Flex, with crash test dummies buckled into the driver and rear passenger seats. Flex's five-star rating, the highest possible, indicates a 5 percent or less chance of serious injury.
"Safety is a top purchase consideration, second only to fuel efficiency, so Flex's top safety ratings and highway fuel economy are a winning combination," said Catherine Pearce, Flex marketing manager.

Turbo Sales on the Rise; Ford's Ecoboost leads the Charge

CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operating Registration)
Any Corporation, Company or Person operating a vehicle with a registered Gross Vehicle Weight over 4,500 kg (10,000 lbs) or any Bus with 10 or more passengers must have a CVOR. The registration of a CVOR is free. (www.mto.gov.on.ca)

G License
G License allows you to drive a vehicle with a GVW or GCW of up to 11,000 kg (24,250 lbs)
GVW Gross vehicle weight (the weight of the Vehicle and its contents)
GCW Gross Combined weight (the weight of the Vehicle and it’s contents plus the weight of the Trailer and it’s contents.) The Trailer and its contents can weigh no more than 4,600 kg (10,141 lbs.)

D License
D license allows the Driver to operate any Truck or Trailer with a GVW or GCW over 11,000 kilograms (24,250 lbs) provided the Trailer and its contents are under 4,600 kilograms (10,141 lbs)

Z Endorsement
Is required to operate any vehicle with an Air Braking System regardless of any other Criteria.

A License
“A” License is required to operate a vehicle pulling a Trailer and contents greater than 4,600 kg (10,141 lbs). Provided it does not exceed the weight restriction of the Manufacturer or the Length and Width restrictions of the MTO.

Weigh Scales
All Commercial Vehicles regardless of size are required to stop at Weigh Scales when the Amber Lights are flashing. This includes Pick Up Trucks. The MTO is mainly concerned with Heavy Trucks and Trailers however Light Duty Trucks may also be pulled over.

Vehicles with Plows
Roof Clearance Lights and Rear Marker Lights must be on every Vehicle that is over 81” Wide.
(This would pertain to Dual Rear Wheel Vehicles and most Plow Trucks)

Is Auto Leasing Really Dead?

August 1st 2008 it was official GM and Chrysler are no longer Leasing Passenger Vehicles and Light Trucks through their Finance Companies. This comes after the American Housing Crisis which eroded the ability to borrow money and the high oil prices have not helped at all. The decision to cancel the lease program was not easy decision to make but I am sure they did not have a choice.

Leasing is available from Ford’s Red Carpet Lease program. Residuals (Buybacks) of the Ford Product have been adjusted over the last 3 years and will be adjusted even further to reflect the market. Ford also has taken an 8 Billion Dollar write down on its lease portfolio in order to avoid such radical steps that GM and Chrysler is faced with.

The trend for GM and Chrysler now will be long term financing for 60 month and 72 month financing. I am not sure if this will be good for the customer as there are typically higher costs of repair and maintenance in the 4th, 5th, and 6th year of ownership.

The Auto Industry is the biggest employer in Canada and the US and it is important to our economy. We need to keep it strong and support our local car and truck plants. Buying vehicles manufactured off shore created competition and made the American Vehicles on Par with the Japanese and in some cases better.

It will be interesting to see the impact of all the new smaller vehicles that Ford GM and Chrysler will be launching in the next 18 months. The Koreans and the Japanese manufacturers have never had massive direct competition in their small car market. In addition the North American Manufacturers are making sure they will make profit on the cars they sell.

I will keep you posted as this story develops. Remember this is a correction in the market and it will work it self out over the next few months.
